Career in a Slump? Here’s How to Break Out

Are you currently working but feel like you’re in a career slump? If you’re feeling chronically bored or complacent, it may be time to evaluate your career goals or even your current job. Are you staying in your current job because it’s familiar and easy? Maybe that’s why you’re feeling like you’re in a slump.

The solution is to get out of that comfort zone.

4 Ways to Break Out of a Career Slump

Leaving your comfort zone, especially when it comes to your career can seem scary and daunting. After all, your livelihood is on the line. However, the prospect is a lot less worrisome if you break it down into easy, simple steps.

Try Something New

A reliable way to break out of a career slump is to try something new. It doesn’t have to be a new job at first. Start with something less intimidating like volunteering. Another option is to learn a new skill that would contribute to your work. This may include outside classes or training, or even meeting with a colleague and asking to shadow them.

Talk to Different People

If you only talk to the same people every day, you may be losing out on valuable conversation that could inspire you and your career. Consider meeting new co-workers, or join some professional networking groups. These groups are meant to help people make connections so everyone is open to being social. You may be energized just by talking to new people and you might even realize an opportunity that you never would have considered had you not opened up your circle a bit.

Take a Class

A great way to break out of a slump is to take a class. Of course, a class that will contribute to your work is a great way to excel in your career and meet other professionals in the same field as you. However, learning something new that’s outside your industry is also a valuable way to become inspired and can still help you become motivated in your career.

Use a Search Firm

If you need to find another position  but are having a hard time finding what will excite you, consider utilizing an established search professional that specializes in your industry. They have their fingers on the pulse of the industry. They can provide advice and direction on your career search.  Even better, many times they have positions that are never posted that could be a perfect fit for you. They deal directly with the decision makers, can provide invaluable insight into the company and culture and provide guidance throughout every stage of the interview process.

Use all or some of the options above to get your career back on track.
